Friends pouring wine and sharing food outdoors

The best team days do not feel like team days. They feel like a good Sunday with people you happen to work with, and that only happens when everyone has something to do with their hands.

Cook something together

A pasta lesson dissolves hierarchy in about four minutes. Someone is rolling, someone is failing gloriously, someone discovers they are brilliant at ragù. By the time you sit down, the room has already changed.

Everything starts at the market: pick the produce as a group.

Give the day one shared goal

Catch the fish, then cook the fish. Choose the wines, then pair them at dinner. One thread through the day gives people a reason to talk that has nothing to do with quarterly numbers.

Keep the group small, or split it

Above about eight people, conversation fragments. Split larger groups into cooking stations or vehicles, then bring everyone back together at one long table for the finish.

A happy group of guests on a Waiheke vineyard tour

Nobody remembers the agenda. They remember who they sat next to.
