Winter Wine Tasting on Waiheke: What Actually Works

Fewer crowds, open fires and the most generous pours of the year.

Waiheke in winter is the island the locals keep for themselves. The ferries are quiet, the cellar doors are warm, and the person pouring your wine has time to talk about the vintage instead of rushing to the next table.

Winter is the winemaker's season

Harvest is done, the tanks are full and the estates finally breathe. That means the people you meet at the tasting bench are often the same people who made the wine, and they will happily open something that never leaves the cellar in summer.

Where to sit when the weather turns

Look for venues built around fire and glass: covered terraces, long indoor tables and cellar rooms. A tasting flight beside a fireplace with rain on the windows is a completely different pleasure to a summer deck, and arguably a better one.

We keep three or four wet-weather alternatives in our back pocket every day, so a shower never becomes a lost afternoon.

Winter guests always say the same thing: it felt like we were visiting friends, not booking a tour.

Make it a long lunch

Cool weather is made for slow food, braises, handmade pasta, a bottle of syrah that finally gets to show its structure. Book lunch for 1pm, leave two hours for it, and let the afternoon go where it wants.

A long lunch is the anchor of every winter itinerary we plan.

Small groups matter even more in winter, when the best rooms are the smallest. We cap every tour at six guests so we can always fit around one table.
