Waiheke in One Day: The Itinerary We'd Choose

Hour by hour, from the 9am ferry to the last light.

Vineyard rows and the sea beyond

If you only get one day, spend it in this order. It follows the light, the crowds and the appetite curve of a normal human being.

9:00: Ferry from Auckland

Forty minutes across the gulf. Sit outside, on the left going over, for the best view of Rangitoto.

10:00: First tasting

Whites and rosé, an empty cellar door and the sea below. This is the quietest hour of the vineyard day.

Flight of wines on a bench
Start light. The syrah can wait.

13:00: Long lunch

Two hours minimum. Order for the table and let someone else choose the wine.

16:00: Beach, viewpoint, gelato

Swim if it is warm, walk if it is not, and take the high road back to the wharf for the last of the light.

Golden light over the gulf
The 6:15 ferry home is the best seat on the island.
